Fix Your Slice

The Secret to Fixing Your Slice

Your CLUBFACE is WHY you slice…

If you’re like me… and most players for that matter, your miss off the tee is a ball that keeps going right.

The SLICE is the most dreaded miss of all because it’s so damn frustrating.

Just when you think you’ve got it under control… You push one into the lake on the other side of the trees.

If you’re like most people, by the back 9, you’ve started aiming OB on the left just hoping to stay in the fairway.

Playing your slice is a dead giveaway for an amateur player… but what’s the alternative? Be a short-knocker and hit 7 iron off the tee?

I spent years trying to fix my slice.

I spent hours at the range… hitting buckets of balls… Not little buckets either, the big coach’s buckets that each one holds hundreds of balls.

I had all the best advice… I’m sure you’ve heard it too.

“You’re casting, coming over the top, from the outside in. You need to swing in to out. That will fix your slice.”

  • I tried to groove a swing so far inside out that slicing should have been impossible…
  • I moved the ball forward… (until the ball was so far forward I felt like Happy Gilmore…)
  • I aimed left…
  • I aimed right…

I felt like a golf super villain. Only someone as talentedly bad as me could possibly still slice a ball like this.

For awhile, I actually had success on the tee box. I could pound drives deep down the fairway if I threw everything I had at it in the most athletic move I could muster. Of course, as soon as I got lazy or tired, I’d lose the next one 150 yards to the right. I thought I wasn’t “finishing” or rotating enough.

It wasn’t until I went back to the basics… rebuilding my swing from the ground up that I found the key to slicing.

The KEY to slicing is NOT CLUBPATH.

In fact, the key to hitting ALL the specialty shot shapes (draw, fade, cut, high, low, etc.) is CLUBFACE.

Your clubpath, more simply put — your swing, doesn’t change much… and it’s hard to change. Your clubpath is the most consistent part of your game. There are a few things you can do to manipulate your clubpath, but your clubpath is controlled by the physical limitations of your body.

Your CLUBFACE is easy to change. Your clubface is so easy to change, you probably don’t even know you are doing it.

Your CLUBFACE is WHY you slice.

Test your clubface by taking a SUPER slow motion backswing and downswing, just don’t actually hit the ball. Stop your clubhead 3 inches behind the tee and look at where your clubface is aimed.

If you think about baseball, you’re the batter. You want an inside out clubpath toward the second baseman. But if your clubface is pointed at the second baseman (open), you’re in big trouble.

Practice a few slow backswings and downswings until you get the feel of controlling the clubface. Stopping just before contact, your clubface should be pointed right back up at the pitcher, straight down your target line.

If you want more of a draw, point the face more toward the Shortstop. If you want more of a fade, point the face more toward the second baseman.

When learning to control the clubface, it’s easy to artificially manipulate the clubface with your hands, and not actually learn how to control the clubface during your swing. The Prolete supports your swing, so you know you’re maintaining a good swing while you work on controlling your clubface.

If you’re rebuilding your swing to have a more professional, powerful, consistent, and reliable swing, the Prolete is a must have.
